Is Nursing for You?
Posted by Oslo Nov 12th 2008, 12:49A patient's stay in a hospital will never be as pleasant as their own home, but the quality of nursing care patients receive can go a long way to bridging the gap.
A kind, empathetic nurse who is quick to respond, resourceful and attentive can create a warm, comforting atmosphere that will not only keep patients happy, but will also provide a morale boost that can help the healing process greatly.
In addition to formal schooling, licensing and certification, there are certain traits and qualities that someone should have in order to excel as a nurse:
- Do you enjoy helping others?
- Are you interested in health and science?
- Are you good at diagnosing problems?
- Can you multi-task?
- Are you detail-oriented?
- Are you a good listener?
- Are you sensitive to the needs of patients?
- Do you work well with others?
- Do you have an optimistic personality?
- Can you maintain patient confidentiality?
- Do you have the ability to be on your feet for much of the day?
- Can you overcome squeamishness at the sight of blood?
- Are you empathetic without becoming overly emotional?
If you answered yes to most or all of these questions, then nursing might be the right career choice for you.
